Practical Basketball PC Controls

Practical Basketball on PC uses a timing-heavy control scheme built for Practical’s Physics V2. Inputs are not one-button arcade actions — hold, tap, and modifier keys combine for pump fakes, contact finishes, and dribble chains. This page is the wiki’s master reference for Stress Test 3 keyboard binds confirmed in community control sheets and live test builds.

Keep it open on a second monitor or phone during your first sessions. Once inputs feel natural, move to How to Shoot, How to Dribble, and How to Dunk for situational usage.

Shooting and finishing at the rim

ActionPC inputNotes

Pump fakeTap ESell the shot before you drive or pass.
Alt pump fakeHold E briefly, release earlySlower sell vs aggressive closeouts.
Layup while drivingHold E while drivingUse when you beat your man but are not dunking range.
Standing dunkHold SpaceRequires vertical and approach from a set position.
Driving dunkShift + SpaceTrigger near the basket with forward momentum.
Jelly finishQ after finish startStyle finish layered on an existing attempt.
Double clutchF after finish startAlters finish timing — practice in empty courts first.

Shooting details and contest reads live in How to Shoot. Dunk angles, contact, and build requirements are expanded in How to Dunk.

Moving shots and shot hesi

ActionPC inputNotes
Moving shot (right)Shift + D + hold EDrift right while releasing at peak.
Moving shot (left)Shift + A + hold EMirror moving shot left.
FadeawayShift + S + hold ECreate space vs taller contests.
Off dribble (right)D + hold EPull-up after one dribble right.
Off dribble (left)A + hold EPull-up after one dribble left.
Shot hesiShift + tap EPick-and-roll staple — freeze then drive or shoot.
Hesi pullTap E while movingSpace for step-back timing.

Gathers at the rim

Gathers chain movement with Shift and E for euro steps, hop steps, and direction changes. Low speed-with-ball or layup ratings truncate chains — check Build Attribute Helper.

ActionPC inputNotes
Euro stepShift + double-tap EChange direction at the rim.
Hop stepShift + tap EShort gather into finish.
Spin gatherDouble-tap ERotate gather before layup.
Side step (right)Shift + D + tap ELateral gather right.
Side step (left)Shift + A + tap ELateral gather left.
Hop step backShift + S + tap ECreate space vs rim protectors.
BTB gather R→LShift + tap E moving left (ball in right)Behind-the-back gather.
BTB gather L→RShift + tap E moving right (ball in left)Mirror BTB gather.

Jab steps and triple threat

Jab steps sell drives before you commit to a dribble move. They share Z/C/X with dribble keys but fire from a standstill triple-threat stance.

ActionPC inputNotes
Jab (right)CQuick right-foot jab.
Jab (left)ZQuick left-foot jab.
Jab (turn around)XBack-to-basket jab sell.
Jab step exit (right)Shift + CExplode out of jab right.
Jab step exit (left)Shift + ZExplode out of jab left.
Jab step exit (turned)Shift + XExit facing away from basket.

Passing

Teammate passing uses number keys mapped to receivers. Double-taps and Shift modify pass type.

ActionPC input
Pass to teammate1–4 (mapped slots)
Bounce passDouble-tap 1–4
Chest passShift + 1–4
Flashy passShift + double-tap 1–4
Swing pass (right)Hold D + 1–4
Swing pass (left)Hold A + 1–4
Bounce swing (right)Hold D + double-tap 1–4
Bounce swing (left)Hold A + double-tap 1–4
Fake passHold Q + 1–4

Passing is how stress-test lobbies stay playable. Full decision trees live in How to Pass. Alley-oop specific inputs are covered below and in How to Alley-Oop.

Alley-oops, screens, and team actions

ActionPC inputNotes
Self alley-oopFNeeds runway and timing — not in a crowd.
Teammate alley-oopT + number (receiver slot)Receiver must cut toward rim.
ScreenHold TPick-and-roll with Pick and Roll Guide.

Self lobs need runway and timing — throw them when you have space, not in traffic. Teammate lobs require the receiver to jump at the right moment; coordinate in park chat or use predictable cuts.

Post moves (G key)

Interior scoring uses Hold G to post up. Full move tables live on Post Moves.

ActionPC input
Post up / exitHold G / Release G
SpinRelease G + A/D
DropstepHold G + direction + double-tap E
HookHold G + A/D + E
FadeHold G + Shift + A/D/S + E

Dribbling (Z / C / X / V)

Ball-handling maps to Z, C, X, and V depending on ball hand. Handedness changes which move fires — see How to Dribble for full stationary and Shift escape tables.

Hesi (left hand)Z

Hesi moves freeze defenders for a beat — use them to set up pull-ups or drives, not as idle animation spam.

Defense and help habits

Defense is mostly positioning, stamina, and contest timing rather than unique combo keys. Sprint with Shift taps, stay between ball and basket, and study How to Defend for closeouts, steals, and rim help.

How controls interact in a possession

Think in layers:

  1. Setup dribble — hesi or combo to shift the defender’s hips.
  2. Decision — if help rotates, hit 1–4 or Shift + 1–4 to the open man.
  3. Finish — hold E for layup or shot; Shift + Space or hold Space for dunks when build and angle allow.
  4. Style layerQ or F after a finish starts for jelly or double clutch when you are already committed.

Skipping layers is how beginners turn open drives into blocked attempts.

Controls versus build

Inputs alone do not grant dunk packages or elite handle. Height, attributes, and badge selections from How to Create a Build determine whether a standing dunk attempt is realistic or a forced miss.

  1. Stationary shooting — hold E releases without moving; add tap E pump fakes.
  2. Passing triangle — pass 1–4, bounce double-tap, chest Shift + 1–4.
  3. Hesi only — alternate C and Z until you can hesi into a straight drive.
  4. One combo route — pick a short Z/C/X/V chain from How to Dribble.
  5. Dunk attempts — hold Space under the rim, then Shift + Space on drives.
  6. Alley-oop lab — self F first, then T + number with a willing teammate.

If you are brand new, read Getting Started for queue flow before you drill advanced chains.

Platform notes

This reference reflects PC keyboard binds for Stress Test 3. Console and gamepad players should read Console Controls — Xbox and PlayStation use hold X/Square to shoot, RT/R2 + Y/Triangle for driving dunks, and D-Pad or right-stick overlays for dribbles. Mobile touch layouts differ again; see Mobile Controls when available.

When in doubt during a test window, verify binds in-game shootaround or community Discord pins linked from Links.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers players ask before every park session.

What key shoots in Practical Basketball on PC?

Hold E to shoot or finish a layup while driving. Tap E for a pump fake without releasing a full shot attempt.

How do I dunk on PC during stress tests?

Hold Space for a standing dunk near the basket. Press Shift + Space for a driving dunk when you have forward momentum on approach.

How do teammate alley-oops work?

Press T plus the receiver number key (1–4) while they cut toward the rim. Self alley-oops use F. Timing and spacing matter — see the alley-oop guide.

Which keys are used for dribble combos?

Z, C, X, and V chain into various combos. C is hesi right hand; Z is hesi left hand. Shift modifiers add escape and explosive variants.

Where are console controls documented?

See Console Controls for Xbox and PlayStation ST3 bindings. PC keyboard remains the recommended platform for precision timing.
